I rent a car yesterday.
I did not know why it took as same time as by train to go to Mt.Cook from Christchurch by bus.
It was easy. Because there was no "Shinkansen", Japanese super express, in New Zealand. Before leaving Japan, we planed to go to Inverrcargill, where our son did homestay in 1998. Then we did not know that there was no super express like "Shinkanse" in New Zealand.
We only had 7 night in New Zealand, and had many plans to go and do, so we gave up to go there. It was too far to go without using a super express or a aircraft.

Since the drive was our first experience in foreign country, we worried about traffic jam.
No problem. Absolutely safe country, because we only saw small animals out side of the town. A suburb of a town is a world for stock farms and wineries. We saw few people and cars out side of a town.

It was a good scenic 330km drive from Christchurch to Mt.Cook. Blue sky and green lakes and high mountains.
We had a lunch in Tekapo. It was the place famous with a church of the good shepherd. It was a small church, but Lake Tekapo was the very beautiful lake with mystic green water.
There were many tourists by bus, looked retired foreigners, and they took many pictures.
Yes, here is a one of the famous photograph point.
"Katsudon" I had at the Japanese restraint was quite large. It was delicious but I could not have all of it.
Route-1 Cows and sheep looked had grow up free from all cares.
All of the windbreak forests were well maintained. How do they trim those trees? Because the height is over 20m ! May be they need to use a heavy industrial machine, and it must be expensive. Their purpose of the life is to enjoy, I think, and I sympathize with their life style.
Tekapo Lake Tekapo had green water, and we could see mountains covered with white snow another side of the lake. It's was absolutely beautiful scene. We can express the image of New Zealand using three colors.
Green lakes, Blue sky and White mountains. Those are the three basic color of New Zealand, I think.
We took Route 1, 8 and 80 to go to Mt.Cook. It was a nice scenic drive.
